Toad in the Hole

Who doesn’t love toad in the hole? These individual toad in the holes are fun and easy for kids to make. This recipe makes enough for two people. I used a muffin tray to make the individual toad in the holes – I think two per person is just right.

Ingredients

  • 4 Pork/Vegetarian Chipolata Sausages
  • 75g Plain Flour
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 1 Egg
  • 90ml Milk
  • Vegetable Oil Spray
  • Green Veg of choice
  • Gravy

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 220ᵒC. Add a generous amount of oil to the amount of holes required in a muffin tray (2 per person).
  2. Cut the sausages in half and place two halves into each muffin hole. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
  3. In a large bowl, sieve in the flour and salt and make a well in the centre.
  4. Break the egg and whisk quickly with a fork. Add the egg to the well.
  5. Measure the milk into a jug and pour a little onto the eggs. Use a whisk to gradually whisk the egg/ milk mix whilst incorporating the flour from around the edges. As the mixture begins to thicken, pour a little more milk. (This process will give you a perfectly smooth batter!). Pour the batter into a jug.
  6. With an adults help, remove the sausages from the oven and add enough batter to cover the sausages and half fill each hole. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden.
  7. Meanwhile, prepare your choice of green veg and add to a saucepan of boiling water 5 minutes before your toad in the hole is due to come out of the oven. At the same time, add some gravy powder and water to a saucepan and stir until you have a smooth thick gravy.
  8. Remove your toad in the holes from the oven, drain the veg and serve altogether immediately. Yum!
