This is literally one of my favourite things ever so I’ve put together, what I think is, the best recipe for it! It was a MASSIVE hit at our French Cuisine workshop and I’m so glad I got to share it with everyone!
Ingredients
Makes 6 Small Sandwiches/ 3 Regular
- 20g Butter
- 20g Plain Flour
- 200ml Milk
- ¼ Tsp Nutmeg
- 200g Gruyere/Cheddar Cheese, finely grated
- 12 Small slices Bread/ 6 Large slices
- 1 Tsp Mustard
- 6 Slices Honey Roast Ham
Directions
- Preheat your oven grill to its highest setting.
- To make a béchamel sauce; melt the butter in a pan and stir in the flour. Remove from the heat and gradually add the milk, whisking out any lumps. Return to a medium heat and simmer, whisking continuously until thickened. Remove the pan from the heat. Season, add the nutmeg and mustard, stir in 20g of the cheese and set aside.
- Lay the bread on two large baking sheets and lightly toast on one side under the grill.
- Preheat the oven to 200°C. Spread a little bechamel sauce on each slice of toast. Add a slice of ham to half of them and then divide most of the remaining cheese among the slices. Top with the other toasted bread slices.
- Spread each sandwich with a large spoonful of béchamel sauce and sprinkle a little cheese on top. Bake in the oven for 5-10 minutes. Optionally, turn on the grill again and grill each croque monsieur for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is golden brown.
