Bagels

A little bit sweeter then a regular bread roll with a hole in the middle… what’s not to like!? Use Poppy Seeds or Sesame Seeds to decorate them!

Ingredients

  • 500g Strong Bread Flour
  • 2 Tsp Salt
  • 7g Fast Action Dried yeast
  • 2 Tbsp Light Brown Sugar
  • 300ml Warm Water
  • Oil, for greasing
  • Egg Wash
  • Choice of seeds to top (sesame/poppy)

Directions

  1. Stir together the flour, yeast, salt and sugar in a large bowl.
  2. Measure the water and add most of it to the flour mixture.
  3. Use a cutlery knife to quickly stir the water into the flour mix. The ingredients will come together in large flakes. Where the mixture looks dry, add the remaining water and continue to stir.
  4. Bring the mixture together in your hands and place on a clean, floured work surface.
  5. Knead the bread dough until it is smooth and it springs back when you press it.
  6. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with oiled cling film, and leave to rise for about an hour or until it has doubled in size.
  7. Once the dough has risen, quickly knead it again (knock it back) and then separate it into 10 same sized pieces.
  8. Use your hands to smooth the dough into rounds and then use a floured finger to press a hole through the middle.
  9. Place the bagels on an oiled baking sheet and leave them to rise again for 20 minutes.
  10. Check that the bagels are ready by poking your little finger into the side of one. If the dent that you make remains, then the bagels are ready to be baked.
  11. Brush the tops of the bagels with egg wash to give them a golden colour after baking. Sprinkle your choice of seeds on top of your bagel.
  12. Bake them in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden and sound hollow when you tap them. Transfer to a wire rack and cover with a clean tea towel to allow them to steam and keep them soft.
